Ass. Prof. Mihallaq Qirjo

Albania

Mihallaq Qirjo has an environmental background, PhD in Applied Ecology. He is a lecturer of Ecology and Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Tirana University and leads the Resource Environmental Center Albania.

He has extensive experience over 30 years on developing national and local policies on the fields of waste, water and natural resources management. Major component of the his contribution is institutional development of national agencies and civil society organisations, assessments of program implementation based on result based methodologies, and development of education and information tools for increasing the public participation in environmental decision making.

Mihallaq Qirjo had published over 45 scientific papers in international and national scientific publications.

His most recent contribution on this respective field of this assignment are: Monitoring the environmental qualities of Kune Vain lagoon (2018-2023), Team leader on drafting the “National Strategy on Integrated Waste Management in Albania 2021-2035”, National expert on updating the National Determined Contributions for Albania on natural ecosystems (2021), regional and national expert in several evaluation processes for of marine, waste and biodiversity projects, implemented by GIZ, KfW, UN agencies. Recent, products are Monitoring the implementation of National Strategy on Climate Change for Albania, Action plan for Gender in Water Policies in Albania.

He has been part of many research programs or invited as visiting professor in US, France, Hungary, Germany, Greece, Kosovo, etc. In addition, he is “Climate Leader” (as part of Al Gore Climate Reality, US), member of Climate Action Network Europe (EU), and evaluation panellist for Katerva Awards on Sustainability (UK).
